How The World’s Longest Yard Sale Began

June 18th, 2010 Articles

With nearly 25 years under its belt, the World’s Longest Yard Sale is an annual event that proves rural communities have something to offer tourists, too. It began in 1987 as a way to lure travelers away from Interstate 40 and I-75 and onto the scenic US Highway 127.

The original idea of the World’s Longest Yard Sale was developed by former Fentress County Executive Mike Walker. His vision was to bring travelers to the less traveled highways of Tennessee and Kentucky, and has since created a sustainable tourism industry for Fentress County. In addition to the sales, visitors enjoy the beauty of the natural landscape.

The World’s Longest Yard Sale has become such a staple in the area that schools in Fentress County close during the first two days so teachers and students can avoid the heavy traffic.
