Safety is important wherever you go – around town, the big city, foreign countries, etc. So how can you stay safe while on vacation? Here are a few travel safety dos and don’ts:
Do:
- Do stay on the main roads and in populated areas.
- Do pay attention to everything going on around you.
- Do travel light. This will help you be less tired, plus you’ll have a free hand if you need it.
- Do bring a photocopy of your passport (and maybe even extra passport photos) just in case your passport is lost or stolen.
- Do learn a few phrases in the local language, or at least have them in written form, so you can get urgent help if needed.
Don’t
- Don’t draw attention to yourself. Try to blend in with locals, avoid a lot of expensive-looking jewelry and don’t pull out a lot of cash.
- Don’t travel alone, especially at night.
- Don’t share your travel plans with strangers. You never know who they really are and if they might have a secret agenda.
- Don’t take taxis that are not identified with official markings. Beware of unmarked cabs.
- Don’t be afraid to alert the authorities if you feel threatened.
